The Aberdeen Choral Union

The Aberdeen Choral Union, formed in 1859, played a leading role in establishing musical recitals and entertainments in the social life of Aberdeen. They gave four concerts per year and the programmes would also include organ solos and pieces by the union’s instrumental band. Members of the union gave their services for free, whereas guest artists were paid for their appearance. Choral concerts became so popular that in 1870 a series of ten concerts were to feature a ‘Choir of a Thousand Voices’ singing psalms and hymns with the audience joining in.
