Ronnie took part in the “Gay Town” competition on 10 April 1958 organised by the Scottish Daily Express to find the happiest town in Scotland. North East towns all competed in this event in the Music Hall. Ronnie sang with a band called the Cracker Jacks. He remembers around 1,200 people attended the event which was won by Elgin. The Cracker Jacks were the last band to play. A girl asked him for his autograph; the one and only time someone ever asked for his autograph. The headline in the paper the next day was ‘Jim and Ronnie rock the joint’.
