Nicola Benedetti MBE is a world-famous Scottish classical violinist. Her 2012 album The Silver Violin celebrates the world of 20th century film music and includes some of the greatest film scores ever written. She performed it at the Music Hall in this concert in 2013. Born in North Ayrshire, to an Italian father and a Scottish mother, Nicola began violin lessons at the age of five, before attending the Yehudi Menuhin school until the age of 15. By the age of 16 when she won the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition she had already performed on stage with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Scottish Opera among others. Nicola was awarded the Queen’s Medal for Music in 2017, the youngest ever recipient, and was appointed a MBE in the 2013 New Year Honours, in recognition of her international music career and work with musical charities throughout the United Kingdom.
