Mary saw the Halle Orchestra perform at the Music Hall in 1951 when she was eight. The photograph shows her playing the violin with a member of the orchestra playing the back ground. Mary’s music teacher took her and introduced her to the conductor Sir John Barbirolli who signed her programme. Mary remembers listening the Halle Orchestra and ‘the whole world disappeared except for the music’. All she really remembers from the night is the music, although she remembers as child thinking that it was a very old building and that women were wearing fur coats that smelt of moth balls and black clothes. It was wonderful. Every time she listens to classical music it takes her back to that concert. She can ‘hear it now’.
