Billy Connolly (voted Britains most influential comedian of all time in 2012) entertained crowds at the Music Hall from the 1970s through to 2014. His famous ‘banana boots’ made their first appearance on the stage at the Music Hall. The boots were designed and made by Glasgow pop artist Edmund Smith in 1975. Connolly had ordered a pair of size 9 ‘bananas’ for a new show. After making the first boot, Smith remarked that the second would not be identical, ‘as bananas never are’, and gave it the Fyffes label. The boots made their first appearance on stage at the Music Hall, Aberdeen, in August 1975. They became Billy Connolly’s trademark at the time, and the documentary Big Banana Feet took its title from them.
